A Columbia University School of Nursing AI-assisted audit found nearly 3,000 peer-reviewed medical papers contain fabricated citations that do not exist in scientific databases, with the rate growing more than 12-fold since 2023. The study of 2.5 million biomedical papers published between January 2023 and February 2026 identified 4,046 fake citations, with the sharpest increase beginning mid-2024 coinciding with the rise of AI writing tools.
